Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile" and I will respond by asking you five questions that satisfy my curiosity. Update your journal with the answers to the questions, including this in the post.

Questions from [info]redmartel:

1) So, since Jews don't proselytize, is my new family less a bunch of idiots?

It isn't proselytizing specifically that pushes my buttons. I have a hard time not being disdainful of religion in general, and that applies to pretty much every religion from New Age to Islam. As I said in my last post, a lot of it has to do with the fact that I stopped believing in God so early and, thus, tend to find adults that believe in it ludicrous on some level, like grown-ups who still believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. On a rational level, I know this isn't fair and that I know plenty of intelligent people who I respect who are religious. But it is an emotional response that I have to work to overcome, or I get patronizing and sarcastic. It is why I stopped discussing religion online. I just couldn't do it without being a dick.

2) Where you are working again, and are they hiring?

SUNY Buffalo and it has a hiring freeze for every department except for mine, due to the massive (and repeated) state budget cuts. I think we are on our third cut for this year alone.

3) Do you run games anymore?

Yep. I run D&D every Sunday and do occasional one-shots when we have a day free. Last one I ran was Kerberos Club, a Victorian Superhero game. They fought Automaton Domestics put out by Babbage Computational, run by the creepy Lady Ada Lovelace.

4) How do you not let the time your son needs annoy you when you want to do geek things?

It can be tough. I remind myself that we are his world, that he can't go off and find something else to do when we are occupied. I try hard to balance it out, making sure to take him out to do fun stuff before games and spending as much time with him as I can before and after. It is easier now that we've started to get a handle on the ADHD, because he is more capable of focused playing. I just try to be patient.

5) Did you like Watchmen? Will you like Avatar?

I loved Watchmen. Don't know about Avatar, though I'm willing to give it a go. Cameron is a good director who produces films that look great, but I don't think he's a terribly good writer.

More Dave Eggers, plus TIME TRAVEL
[info]finkenstein
I meant to also post this yesterday, because it is a part of something AMAZING Dave Eggers and his colleagues started.
Have you heard of the time Travel Mart?

Or the Super hero supply company?

Well I did not know this until I watched Dave Eggers' TED talk, but not only are they fucking AWESOME art installations, they are also SCHOOLS and writing workshops where kids can get tutored for FREE.

Dave Eggers' Once Upon a School:

This shit brings me to tears it is so inspiring and amazing.

Dave Eggers, I love you.

In response to the question:
"are you concerned that you're not publishing as many unknowns as you had been? And killed pieces? Are you taking any steps-are there any steps to be taken-to keep shit real?"

Dave Eggers responded with the most wonderful, amazing, gorgeous answer that speaks directly to my fucking SOUL.
You will love this.

The Botany of Desire
[info]finkenstein
Totally awesome documentary I watched the other day called the Botany of Desire. It's about the amazing ways we have forced plants to evolve into the varied and vastly different things they are today compared to 500 years ago.

It's also about the amazing control plants have over us. One thing I was specifically amazed by was TULIP MANIA a period in dutch history when people went completely insane for tulips so much so as to pay "...10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman..." for one fucking tulip bulb. A flower! A thing that does not feed you or clothe you, just sits there and looks pretty.
